Fux Restaurant has been around since 1998, and Fux Wine Agency almost as long. Over time, wine evolved from a hobby to a passion, and knowledge about it into expertise. While everyone else was lying on the beach reading thrillers during the summer season, Peter Strolz was lifting a 5kg copy of Broadbend's Wine Encyclopedia into the sun. He tested what he found interesting in the book at tastings. His preferences shifted from Austria to Italy, touched on the New World, and the deeper Peter Strolz's relationship with oenology became, the clearer his personal conclusion: if it's to be good, it has to be France.
"The quality of Burgundy wines, especially Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, is unique." And this assessment also applies to the second pillar of their portfolio: Champagne. However, the wine agency doesn't work with large Champagne houses, but exclusively with small wineries. “It’s like comparing handcrafted, bespoke leather shoes to Adidas slides,” says Peter Strolz.
Peter Strolz is the heart of the Fux Wine Agency. His premise for the wine business is simple: he only sells what he personally enjoys. What might seem snobbish stems from a fundamentally honest attitude.
On wine journeys to small, distinctive estates in Burgundy and Champagne, wine jewels are sought out and discovered far from the well-known names. They enrich the portfolio and bring variety to both the glass and the cellar.
Each wine is personally tasted and selected. Only when the quality truly convinces does a wine make it into the range. Value for money has to be right—though that doesn’t mean Burgundy wines and Champagne must always come with a hefty price tag. Of course, you can spend a lot, no question about it; but alongside that, the wine agency’s list also features wonderful everyday wines that are easy on the wallet.
A firm handshake, a good dose of humor, and an uncomplicated way of dealing with one another make the wine agency’s business relationships pleasant—and friendly. This applies both to customers and to the partner winemakers.
“The people of Burgundy and Champagne are like us,” Peter often says. “They don’t talk much, but they stand by a handshake. They’re earthy characters. You have to earn their affection, but then work turns into trust and ultimately into friendship. I value personal relationships. I’m an analog kind of person.”
It therefore comes as no surprise that most of the winemakers the Fux Wine Agency works with are committed to organic viticulture—many of them certified. For the majority of its portfolio, the Fux Wine Agency acts as the exclusive importer for Austria. Wines are delivered directly from the estates to the cellar and from there, well stored, to customers in Austria and other parts of the world.
Peter Strolz knows every wine in the cellar—its character and its aging potential. He knows which wine suits which people and which occasion. At the heart of the Fux Wine Agency is not selling, but advising and finding the perfect pairing.
