Niepoort
Portugal
Niepoort is synonymous with world-class port wine – and with a winemaking spirit that has profoundly redefined the Portuguese understanding of wine. What began in Vila Nova de Gaia now extends to the highest vineyards of the Douro – and far beyond.
Since 1842, Niepoort has been a family business, renowned for its port wines of precision, depth, and aging potential. Vintage ports with a global reputation, Colheitas, White Ports, and the rare Garrafeiras – they all bear a signature: never over-extracted, never cloyingly sweet, but always taut, elegant, and structured.
Anyone who knows Portugal knows Niepoort. And anyone who knows Dirk Niepoort knows: Here works a disruptive genius who has reshaped the Portuguese understanding of wine – radically and with a thirst for knowledge. Dirk has now largely passed the torch to his adult children.
...`` `` `` `` `` `` `` `` `` `` `` The finest grapes come from old vineyards in Cima Corgo and Douro Superior – with vines over 100 years old. Hand-harvested, fermented in the lagar (often foot-trodden), and aged in large, old wooden casks – the methods are traditional, yet not backward-looking. The style is dry, structured, and built on freshness, with enormous aging potential.
In addition to port, the estate has expanded to include fascinating table wines – from Charme to Redoma, from the Dão to the Azores – but at its heart, Niepoort remains a port wine house.
Sommeliers worldwide appreciate the balancing act: port wines with noble depth, without baroque heaviness, embedded in an intellectual, yet always playful, overall concept.
“Port wine is not a museum piece. It is a poem that continues to be written.” – Dirk Niepoort (Noble Rot, 2018)
Niepoort combines heritage with conviction – and brings port wine back to where it belongs: at the top of the world.
